Dublin Square: Irish authenticity in Bordentown, NJ

Jun 11, 2010

It’s hard to find a more authentic Irish pub outside of Ireland. Dublin Square owners Michael and Sean McGeough imported many interior components of the pub from Ireland. There’s nothing imitation about this pub’s traditional design.

At the heart of Dublin Square is the bar. The bar remains well stocked, polished and clean—a reflection of the staff's and owners’ pride in the establishment. The interior of the pub is dark in color. As in true established Irish pubs, some areas of the pub are intimate, while others are meant for large social gatherings.

Dublin Square offers a variety of seating options. This reflects the versatility of the pub—one area might host a quiz game while another might be reserved for patrons enjoying a quieter dinner. There are multiple high-top tables near the bar, especially useful for those ordering drinks and appetizers and looking to socialize.

This is an excellent pub for visitors who are new to traditional Irish cuisine. Dublin Square’s menu mixes Irish food with regular, recognizable pub staples, such as fish and chips. Instead of offering a more modern “New Celtic” menu, Dublin Square sticks to the basics and provides variety on classic Irish foods such as boxty.

The crab cakes are particularly crispy without being overcooked. The fish and chips, featuring fish prepared in beer batter, is hearty rather than sweet. While the menu does include plenty of seafood, crab dip would be a welcome and traditional addition.

The drink menu is as solid and confident as the bar itself. The beers offered reflect a range and variety with a slant towards traditional Irish tastes. Draught selections include Guinness and Harp (twin staples of authenticity), local Yuengling Lager, Pilsner Urquell, Magner’s Irish Cider, multiple ales and the refreshingly light Hoegaarden. Dublin Square covers all bases with the beers available in bottles, including Sam Adams.

HelloMetro Tip: Beyond the quality food, friendly staff and general good times, Dublin Square keeps ahead of the competition on more than its authenticity. The pub’s dynamic website hosts frequent updates, including a calendar that is always kept current. Events frequently listed on the calendar include Irish music performances, cash drawings, quiz nights and specials for the military.
